Ice, explosions, power outages & more snow!

Neal and I had a home teaching appointment yesterday and since we had already ventured out for church :) without any problems, we decided to keep this appintment. After our visit with our family, we decided that since we were already out we would make our 12 days of Christmas drop off even though it was in broad daylight. So off we went to our drop-off house. Just as we turned the corner at the house we heard a loud explosion and Neal saw sparks! Low and behold a transformer just blew! I've never seen a live wire burn before, but there was quite a little fire going on just a block away.

Sorry the pictures aren't very clear. I wasn't going to get any closer!

After asking a stranger to make the drop for us (said drop-off-man-of-the-house was up on his roof scraping ice) we decided to go home and stay there! So we turned the corner to head home, taking the same route we had taken to get there when we ran across a down powerline that had just fallen! So we had to turn around and take a different route home.

Here are a few pictures I caught on the way home of some of the trees that fell to the weight of the ice.

As the evening wore on last night, we kept hearing transformers breaking. So we called a single sister we home teach to check on her. She lives just a few blocks away from said drop-off family. At the time of our call she said things were just fine. But then around 7:45 we got a call from this sister saying her power had just gone out and she really wasn't all that prepared for an outage. So we hopped in our car to run a flashlight, batteries and some food over to her. As we were driving up Liberty Street we saw what looked like a power line fall right in front of us. Neal hit the brakes and we stopped just short of where the line had fallen. We weren't sure what to do, we didn't want to drive over that line. Then a vehicle coming the other way drove right over it and we discovered it was just the ice that had covered the line that came down! We breathed a huge sigh of relief! After dropping off our goods to this sister we came home and stayed there the rest of the night!

This morning we woke up to a quiet morning. It looked like we were going to have a quiet day, weatherwise. Neal left for work at 6:40 to catch the bus on the snow route. About 10 minutes after he left is started snowing and snowed most of the morning! We have a beautiful blanket of fresh clean snow covering our world again! It looks like the snow has just about stopped now so I'll be making another trip outside to clear the driveway and walks! No complaints here! I'm loving it! Only down side is I wish Neal could be home so we could play in it together!

More Wonderland!

Last night we got a call saying church was on as scheduled today, but to "not feel guilty if you decide to stay home". However, this morning we woke to our world blanketed in ice. It was so pretty! We got up and got ready for church as usual, all the while waiting for the call that church was cancelled. The call never came, so we ventured out to attend our meetings. As we passed through the neighborhoods, we noticed ward members vehicles still in their driveways. We began to wonder if maybe we should just turn around and go back home. But we decided to forge forward to church (afterall, I do have a primary class to teach). Well, when we got to the church there was not a car in the parking lot! So we turned around and went back home only to then find a message on our answering machine informing us church was cancelled! So we got our snow clothes on and took a short walk through our neighborhood to capture a few pictures. Now we're ready for some hot chocolate!
